On my last day on vacation in Little Compton, I picked up a Walker's Roadside Stand t-shirt to bring home to California. On the front it read, "Walker's Farm, Little Compton, RI" and on the back, "Just looking for a few good hoes." Tacky and politically incorrect as it might be, the t-shirt was a necessary reminder of my daily trips to Walker's for squash, zucchini, corn, tomatoes, lettuce, berries, nectarines, peppers, grapes, etc. You get the picture. Fresh fruits and veggies during the New England summer? Can't ask for much else. Except for some hoes...

I guess I was expecting people to be a little more friendly? Instead I felt like I was being rushed along to check out while the guy checking me out was chatting with his buddy the whole time. Also, most of the fruits weren't even local. So, it was basically like an outdoor Stop & Shop is what I'm saying.

In the event you didn't figure it out I'm on a Little Compton/Tiverton kick today. My mother in law gets most of her produce from this great stand during the summer, as well as a magically delicious assortment of pastries and spreads. It's a popular spot for cyclists after a ride down the never ending stretch that is Main Rd., and we always always stop after we've gone for a run or walk with the dogs at Warren's Point Beach. Oh how I wish I lived near a roadside stand like Walker's!

If you plan on getting a sandwich, I recommend ordering first, because it takes about 30 minutes to get your order. Once that's over, you can peruse the farmstand--much of which comes from outside of Rhode Island--which is mildly disappointing. What's not disappointing, however, are their amazing wildflower bouquets which are pretty goshdarn beautiful. They also have a great selection of specialty sauces, peanut butters and mayonnaises - at a price. Based on these observations (lack of local-ness, expensive, long waits, and I forgot to mention impersonal, almost rude service) I'm still giving them three stars because... they do have a giant variety and yeah, it's pretty convenient that they offer lunch.

We come to Little Compton for two weeks every summer. Walker's is the place where we get all of our produce. The best are the corn and tomatoes. They also have lots of chips, snacks and drinks. Considering the quality of the product, the prices are hard to beat. This summer we are staying at a rental house next door to the stand. The stand's owner, Coll Walker, rents the house out, and we get 15% off all stand purchases.

Walker's is a fun roadside place to buy nice veges and dip a toe into the Little Compton vibe. I always like stopping here to go to Wilma's next door for a sandwich, cookie, and a Del's frozen lemonade. The produce is really nice and often local. Cash only, if memory serves.

Shocked to see staff at Walkers taking blueberries from little plastic boxes shipped in from Florida and putting them into green paper containers and putting them out for sale - and charging a local blueberry price. Not labeled local, but certainly not quite cricket. And at the height of local blueberry season, too!
